A Kid's Guide To Acts

DAY 7 OF 7

Our Faith In God Can Encourage Others

It’s raining. The roads to Grandma’s house are slick, and you got a late start. Dad rounds a corner and the car slides into the ditch. Even with everyone pushing, you’re stuck in the mud. It’s dark; there are no house lights or traffic. And you’re scared. How will you ever get out of this mess?

Acts 27 and 28 tell us that Paul went through a lot of messy, scary stuff: nearly starving to death because of a storm at sea, a disastrous shipwreck, facing snakes from nowhere, and knowing that if he survived all this, he’d end up chained to a Roman soldier 24/7 in Rome. What next? He was in the dark.

But faith is best exercised in the dark—you need it most when there’s no hope in sight. Fellow believers understood. Some traveled more than 40 miles from Rome to meet Paul along the way (Acts 28:15). Encouragement does that, after all: it goes the distance. Encouraging others isn’t just for when it’s convenient or when we happen to be thinking about it. Encouragement should be intentional—think ahead and make a plan to encourage someone in your life!

When things seem hopeless, how do others encourage you? How can family members help one another keep the faith?

Take a piece of paper and make some notes, sharing what gives you hope about God’s power and promises when they’re hard to see and you feel most alone.
