#JESUS2019 - Daily DevotionalsSample

We live in a world full of lies. Bosses lie to their employees and vice versa, politicians lie to the people by making false election promises, married couples lie to each other. We have all gotten used to this. It is not easy to be one hundred percent truthful at all times. When Jesus says “I am the truth”, he is not referring to some teaching about truth. He spoke of his nature. Jesus IS the truth in person. People always want to select certain parts of Jesus, and only partially accept who he really is. They may respect Jesus as a good person and ethical teacher, but Jesus is truth in person. There are no shadows in his life. Jesus is not familiar with lies, intrigues, secrets and scandals. If I stood before my wife and family, or my church and said: “I have never sinned.” Everybody would object. They would be able to point to many occasions in which I missed my goal. But Jesus was without sin. And that is why he had the authority to say: “I am the truth.” From conversations I have had as pastoral carer I know this: deceived people long most of all for truth. People who have at some point seen the face of the devil, the father of lies (John 8:44), want to escape him and would rather be in the presence of Jesus. For Jesus is crystal clear, pure, holy. No one is like him. He is the truth and therefore the beneficial truth for us human beings.
The second longest cave system in Europe is in Switzerland. It is the so-called Hölloch in the valley Muotatal. At around the age of 20, a friend and I went down into this 203-km-long dark unknown for one night. Just thinking about this causes a shiver. The caves are large, the entrances are often narrow and only accessible with great effort and strength. And it was easy to get lost in the darkness. Dangers lurked, water and insurmountable crevasses. Without lamps, the expedition would have been impossible. For me, the light of the lamp symbolises the truth. Without it, we would be lost. Without truth we have no chance to survive, we lose our way and become entangled in lies.
ACTION STEP:
Today, write down all the secrets and lies you feel you would be ashamed of if Jesus were sitting next to you. Tell him: Jesus, today you may shine a light in my “Hölloch”. I want to overcome all of it and I surrender everything to you.

About this Plan

During the weeks before Easter, we want to acquire deeper understanding of this fundamental event of our faith, get to know Jesus better and experience how his loving deed on the cross can change our lives forever. We will take a closer look at Jesus’ 7 “I am” statements and by doing this, we will find out who Jesus is and what he has to offer us in deeper ways.
