#JESUS2019 - Daily DevotionalsSample

Jesus says: “I am the way.” The term had great meaning in the Roman world. In Palestine, Roman roads were a novelty. Because of the technology that was used for the construction of roads, roads were revolutionary in contrast to natural paths. The Roman roads were straight, with comparatively low gradient. Often monuments lined the roads. Supporting walls and bridges also overcame steep mountains. The roads were vital for the generation at that time. Jesus consciously used this image to make it clear to the people that he would bring them to their destination. The path will not be an easy one. For whoever follows Jesus will have to take his cross upon himself (Luke 9:23). But his path leads to a destination that is worthwhile.
Many Christians have an ‘on-off’ relationship with Jesus. Sometimes it also happens to me that I am not as intensely connected to Jesus as I would like to be. You can easily get caught up in the countless obviously more important daily activities and let your relationship with Jesus slide to the side-lines. But Jesus wants to guide us with a spiritual GPS daily. It is so important that we download our ‘Bible maps’ onto our spiritual smartphones.
Because without this orientation we could take a wrong turn. Later on we will regret these wrong decisions. At the beginning of a wrong turn it may not be obvious yet, but the longer we are off the path, the more we have moved away from the original destination. And you get lost in the thicket of life. But even if you have taken the wrong turn, God’s hands are on you. He paves your path through life.
In the course of my 20-year calling as a pastor, I have seen many people taking the wrong turn. Moreover, they did not allow anyone to warn them: not their Small Group friends, believing family members, or pastors. Often people come to me, after they have been away from Jesus for several years. Afterwards they regretted these wrong decisions. Maybe today you feel like you have taken a wrong turn. Then come back again.
ACTION STEP:
Write down all important decisions you need to make in the next three months. Pray that God will guide you in making these decisions. Intentionally invite the Holy Spirit to guide and lead you.

About this Plan

During the weeks before Easter, we want to acquire deeper understanding of this fundamental event of our faith, get to know Jesus better and experience how his loving deed on the cross can change our lives forever. We will take a closer look at Jesus’ 7 “I am” statements and by doing this, we will find out who Jesus is and what he has to offer us in deeper ways.
