Finish: Imitating An Imperfect KingSample

If David had been given a chance at do-overs, he probably would’ve taken it, but he didn’t have that option. None of us do, which is why David’s example is so powerful. His story not only teaches us how to handle things when we’re at our best and things are going our way, but also shows us how to rely on God to get through the tough times, how to take ownership of our mistakes and do better with God’s help the next time, and how to continue to serve God with passion, fervor, and consistency others may not understand all the way up to the end of our lives.
Sooner or later, we all die. It’s a fact no amount of prayer can change. Our bodies weren’t made to last forever. The legacy you’ll leave behind when your soul leaves yours is being determined by the choices you make today.
Right now, you’re like Solomon when his dad David died, young and relatively inexperienced (1 Chronicles 29:1). This is a good thing. It means you have your whole life ahead of you, a giant white canvas with the potential to become a masterpiece of obedience that inspires other to honor God, smudges or no smudges. You might not feel up to the task yet, but God is. You don’t have to have everything figured out or even know where you’re headed at this point. All you have to do is hand God the paintbrush and decide to cooperate, even when you don’t understand every brushstroke He makes, and everything will turn out just like it’s supposed to in the end.
Thank God for the opportunity to invest in the next generation of Christians and leave behind a legacy of faith, with or without smudges.
About this Plan

Ever heard of David, the shepherd boy turned king? God’s chosen one? Jesus’ great-great-great-something grandfather on his stepfather Joseph’s side? David’s story is fascinating. He made mistakes—big ones—but he never failed to humble himself, confess his sin, and start fresh, letting God do whatever He wanted to do with and through him. Want to know what it looks like to live for God’s glory? Focus on King David.
