Finish: Imitating An Imperfect KingSample

All his life, David had wanted nothing more than to honor God. Yes, he’d strayed off the path when he wasn’t paying close attention, but in his heart of hearts, he wanted to see God lifted up and given the recognition He deserved for being the good, faithful, and mighty God He was and is. No doubt, David would have loved nothing more than to build God’s temple, but God chose someone else. David had shed blood in the natural course of carrying out the duties of the position God had called him to, and that fact—not his sin, which God had wiped clean—disqualified him.
God chose David’s son Solomon instead. A lesser man might have been upset.
David could have argued with God, but he didn’t. He could have pouted, but he didn’t. He could have withdrawn and left the details for others to figure out, but he didn’t. Instead, he gave what he could, his approval, his testimony, his support, his resources, his encouragement, his instruction, and his wise counsel informed by his own mistakes and God’s faithfulness to sustain and restore.
By demonstrating this kind of faith in God’s wisdom and contentment in God’s plan, David did what he’d always wanted to do. He lifted God high and showed others how to honor Him with their lives—their words, actions, reactions, and attitudes—perhaps more effectively than if he’d been allowed to build the temple.
Thank God for the opportunity to bring Him glory even when the role He assigns you isn’t the role you would have liked to have.

About this Plan

Ever heard of David, the shepherd boy turned king? God’s chosen one? Jesus’ great-great-great-something grandfather on his stepfather Joseph’s side? David’s story is fascinating. He made mistakes—big ones—but he never failed to humble himself, confess his sin, and start fresh, letting God do whatever He wanted to do with and through him. Want to know what it looks like to live for God’s glory? Focus on King David.
