Together - Daily Devotional

DAY 98 OF 366

There’s more ELOHIM

The unique Christian doctrine of the Trinity is outside the scope of this simple devotional but we can observe that there is more to ELOHIM than simply the meaning “STRONG FAITHFUL ONE”. There are a number of words in Hebrew which are singular such as Cherub which describes a type of angel. The plural of Cherub is Cherubim as seen in Exodus 25:18-19. Similarly, ELOHIM is a plural form of ELOAH. Its plural nature is emphasised by the phrase “Let us make”. This is not a royal plurality as when Queen Victoria said, “We are not amused” but an indication of plurality in character of the speaker.

Yet Christianity is a monotheistic faith. In other words we believe in one God as in Deut.6:4 yet ELOHIM signifies a plurality in the Godhead. ELOHIM is regarded as a uni-plural noun similar to flock as in a flock of sheep. There is only one flock but it contains more than one individual. As Christians we say that the One God exists in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. At the very beginning of the Bible therefore ELOHIM is an indication of the revelation of the plural nature of the One God.

Prayer: Thank You Father, Son and Holy Spirit that You love me, give Yourself for me and are my companion every day
