DAY 101 OF 366

EL ROEE

According to the culture of the day, a barren wife could have a surrogate child through her maidservant. Hence Sarai  gave Hagar to Abram who made her pregnant. This caused jealousy and such ill treatment by Sarai, that Hagar ran away into the desert.

Hager was dumbfounded to encounter God who she realised was watching over her to protect her and her unborn child. Even though Hagar had run away to face life as a single mother and was in the middle of a desert God saw her and cared. Even though God’s covenant was with Abram and not directly with her, God watched over her to rescue and bless her. So she named God, EL ROEE – “the God who sees me”. Notice God did not watch her dispassionately merely out of interest but compassionately out of love and concern.

EL ROEE – “the God Who Sees Me” watches over you. And He watches over you with such deep feeling and concern that He acts to rescue and restore you. “To give you a future and a hope” (Jer.29:13). When Jesus saw people who were lost, hurting and in need, He was “moved with compassion” and helped them (Mtt.20:34, Mk.1:41, 8:2).

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You do not watch me to condemn but out of compassion to help
