Faith-filled Mary
Reading: Luke 1:26-38
Key Verse: “I am the Lord’s servant”, Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said” v38
Just as Joseph exemplified obedience, so Mary exemplified faith. Despite the staggering twofold news that her barren cousin was pregnant and despite her own virginity, she would have a child, Mary believed. Elizabeth’s endorsed Mary’s faith Luke 1:45; “Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”
Faith is not based on logic or certainty else it would be not faith. Faith exists despite the circumstances. Faith throws a fishing net into a seemingly empty lake, takes someone who is ill to Jesus, believes for the impossible and sees Him who is invisible. But note the source of Mary’s faith. It was not based on an emotional feeling or logical deduction. It was a decision to believe in what the Lord said to her. Paul explained that faith comes by hearing and responding to God’s message (Rom.10:8-17). We also have heard God’s message to our own hearts. This message includes our initial salvation but broadens into an ever deeper friendship and intimacy with Him. Mary’s response was not just an idle belief but faith in action as she helped Elizabeth in her last trimester (Luke 1:56).
Prayer: Lord, may I be a person who not only believes Your Word, but puts faith into action
