My Father’s House

Reading: Luke 2:41-50

We know very little of Jesus life from the time of his arrival in Nazareth until His baptism by John. There is much speculation of when Jesus actually became aware of the special relationship with His heavenly Father. His ministry on earth did not commence until He was thirty years old yet when Jesus was only twelve Luke records this intriguing incident. According to Jewish laws and tradition, all males were required to go to Jerusalem at least once a year to celebrate their relationship with God and commemorate their escape from Egypt through the feast of Passover.

Apparently a large contingent went from Nazareth to Jerusalem but on the homeward journey Jesus was missing. Joseph and Mary returned to Jerusalem and began a panicked search. Yet they found Jesus in the last place they looked – in the Temple. Even by the age of twelve Jesus amazed the religious scholars with His understanding of God, but even more, He was aware that God was his true Father and Jesus just had to be in His Father’s house. What an example to us to gain a deep understanding of the Scriptures and cultivate a desire to be in God’s house.

Prayer: Lord, help me understand the scriptures and deepen my desire to be in Your house
