Shepherds and Angels
Reading Luke 2:8-20
Key Verse: “And there were shepherds living out in the fields ... an angel of the Lord appeared to them” v8-9
If you think of angels, you might imagine beautiful and powerful celestial beings appearing to devoted religious priests or great kings. This story however, is at the heart of the Bible where the announcement of Jesus birth is not to the so called great and good but to filthy, unwashed, lower class shepherds. God looks not on our outward appearance of knowledge, wealth and power but upon our hearts (1 Sam.16:7). The shepherds were actually living out in the fields with the sheep and were protecting them from danger in the middle of the night when the angels appeared to them.
God has chosen you not on the basis of your qualifications or possessions. He shows no favour to the rich or famous. Like the shepherds you may be low down on the social scale and even living in the fields or on the street. But God has appeared to you because he loves you and wants you to have a personal encounter with His Son, Jesus. The shepherd’s encounter changed their lives as they glorified and praised God. Your own personal encounter with Jesus will change you too.
Prayer: Lord, I praise and glorify you because even though I am unworthy you introduced me to Jesus!
