Large is Wonderful

Reading: Eph.5:22-33

Key Verse: “Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is Saviour” v.23

We have seen that the word church can be applied to a few believers meeting in a small locality. Here however, Paul applies the word EKKLESIA to the global community of Jesus followers. If small is beautiful then large is wonderful. The global body of believers are referred to as the gloriously stunning wife or Bride of Christ (see also Rev.19:7, 21:2). 

We may come together with a few other Christians in a local church but we are part of something much bigger whether that is locally, regionally, nationally or globally. In Phil.2:5 Paul identified himself as a Pharisee from the tribe of Benjamin of the people of Israel. He recognised that he belonged locally as a Pharisee, regionally as a Benjamite and nationally as an Israelite. But after he became a Christian he preached the gospel globally to his world.

We are members of a local church or campus which is part of a national church, international church and eventually the worldwide global church – always remembering the church is the people not the organisation. Large is wonderful because it gives us the resources to establish not just a tent but a city on a hill to light the world!

Prayer: Jesus, what a wonderful, caring Saviour and loving Groom You are of Your Bride, the church. I worship You.
