Small is Beautiful

Reading: Matt.18:15-20

Key Verse: “For where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them.” v.20

We have been focussing on the idea that a church consists of people in a locality and the numbers concerned could be so small that those involved could even meet in someone’s home. Today’s reading focuses on the power of unity in prayer and reveals that Jesus is especially present where just two or three people come together in His name.

Christianity is both personal and collective. John 14:21-23 shows that God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ will love us as individuals and make their home personally with us. So we do not have to go to a church to experience the presence of God in our lives. Yet when we do meet with other believers the presence of Jesus is with us together in a very special way. The meeting is not haphazard or unplanned because it is “two or more people come together in my name”. There is decision, planning, commitment and purpose in the coming together. To simply only rely on my individual personal relationship with Jesus would be to spiritually impoverish myself by missing out on the personal presence of Jesus when I meet with others in His name. That is one reason we “go to church”!
