The Church – the Body

Reading: 1 Cor.12:12-28

Key Verse: “Now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it” v.27

A recurring theme in the NT is that the church is like a physical body with many parts combining into one inter-dependent unit. The brain instructs the legs to propel the body to the table where the eye sees the food which the hand takes to the mouth which the stomach digests which is turned into energy and muscle for life and growth. Each part is dependent on all other parts and vitally linked to them. Likewise, we depend on one another to survive and thrive.

One of our concepts of cancer is of a cell no longer serving the purposes of the body but seeking to independently serve itself and then replicate its behaviour to other cells. Paul explains that every part of the body is essential, especially those parts that are largely unseen and may remain unnoticed. Our internal organs such as heart, liver, kidneys etc. are vital for life and in the body of the church roles such as administration are crucial for it to be healthy and grow. Indeed when even a small part does not function well the whole body suffers. That is why every member of the church is vitally important and as valuable as any other.
