What’s a church?
Reading; Col.4:14-16
Key Verse: “Give my greetings to the brothers at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house” v.15
Most people would think of a church as a building but it has been said that a church is the people who remain when the building has gone. In other words a church is not a physical structure of bricks and mortar but consists of the people who are spiritually connected to Jesus and to one another.
Nympha had a church meet in her house. The house was the physical structure, the church were the people who met there to worship God and share His life with each other for mutual support and encouragement. Nympha is only one of several persons in the NT who had a church meet in their house. For example there is Priscilla and Aquila (Rom.16:3-5) and Philemon of whom it is said that, “the church that meets in your home” (Phm.1:1-2).
From these passages we may therefore say that a church is a local gathering of people who are united together by their faith in Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord. It is not limited to rich or poor, male or female, young or old, black or white but is open to all who confess the name of Jesus and desire to follow Him (Gal.3:28).
Prayer: Thank you Jesus that I am a person in Your church connected both to you and others who follow you
