I will build My Church

Reading: Matt.16:13-20

Key Verse: “... on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” v.18

The Bible is full of what we call revelation. This is not merely the last book of the NT but a continual revealing of the person, principles, plan and purposes of God. They are not the natural thoughts of human logic, intuition or imagination but in contrast they are supernatural in origin, intent and explanation.

Today’s Key Verse has caused some debate in Christian circles. What is the rock? Is it Peter or something else? We agree with many churches that the rock is the revelation given to Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the anointed Son of the living God.  Jesus is actually referred to as the rock in 1 Cor.10:4.

The passage in Matthew is the first time the word church appears in the Bible and it contains important understanding for us. It is Jesus who will build the church and it is HIS church. It is not Brian Houston’s church or Gary Clark’s church it is the church of Jesus Christ. Secondly it is Jesus who will build it. We do have a privileged role as we plant seeds and water them but  we should always remember it is God Himself who makes it grow(1 Cor.3:5-9).
