Three prepositions
In an attempt to understand the Holy Spirit, a friend explained the concept of three prepositions to describe how the Holy Spirit influences our lives. These prepositions quoted by Jesus Himself are: with, in and upon. In John 14:17 Jesus revealed that the Holy Spirit was unknown to the world but that He was “with” the disciples. Furthermore, there would be a change in this relationship because the Holy Spirit “will be in you”. Later still, Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit to come upon them.
How can these prepositions help us understand the Holy Spirit? We could say that one of the main roles of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Jesus (John 16:14). So the Holy Spirit is with us to guide, teach, and convict of sin (John 16:7-11, Acts 2:37). The Holy Spirit comes in us to convert, regenerate and shape our character to the image of Jesus. Finally the Holy Spirit comes upon us as He clothes us with supernatural power and abilities so we can manifest the resurrection life of Jesus to the world. To experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit we need to know Him with, in and upon us.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I know the Holy Spirit with, in and upon me
