Together - Daily Devotional

DAY 174 OF 366

Have another drink

Jesus spoke of our forthcoming relationship with the Holy Spirit to be like drinking water (John 7:37-39). We have a proverb: “you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink”. It appears that sometimes the Holy Spirit simply comes upon people to their great surprise (Acts 10:44-46). Often, however the Christian faith is about consciously seeking, asking and receiving (Isa.55:1-3, Luke 11:9-13).

Today’s passage relates to the release of Peter and John from prison and their subsequent meeting of praise and prayer with other believers.  Peter, John and many of the believers would have been filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost yet here they were filled again. No matter how much we have received of the Holy Spirit we can always have another drink!  When the great evangelist D.L. Moody was asked why he had to be filled with the Spirit so often he said simply, “Because I leak.”

But look again in Acts at what happened after they were filled with the Spirit. This was not some self indulgent Christian party because “they ... spoke the word of God boldly”.  An infilling needs to be expressed in an outpouring!

Prayer: Lord I come to You for another drink of the Holy Spirit
