DAY 173 OF 366

Filled with the spirit

One of the most significant features of the Christian faith over the last hundred years or so is that there has been a new emphasis on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. This has given rise to “Pentecostal” and “Charismatic” movements which have even produced new denominations.  A phrase that has been associated with this movement is the “baptism of the Holy Spirit”.  This is based on scriptures such as Acts 1:5, “John baptised with water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit”.

This is sometimes seen as a separate experience to conversion but basically refers to an encounter of the Holy Spirit where His power and presence so fill us that the person of Jesus overflows from our lives. In Ephesians, Paul uses a different phrase, “be filled with the Spirit”. Here, however, the grammar used does not signify a “one off” occurrence but a continual experience of being filled.

All Christians should agree that we need to seek to be continually filled with the wonderful and wise Holy Spirit. Let us not have merely a drop of the Holy Spirit or even be half-filled but overflowing with His love.

Prayer: May I be continually be filled with the Holy Spirit so the love and compassion of Jesus overflows to others
