What is sin?
Sin is an English word to describe a fault in our relationship with God. But in modern times its use can sound archaic and reserved for eating too much chocolate! In the original Hebrew and Greek of the Bible there are various meanings including failing to achieve a standard, longing for that which is prohibited and crossing a boundary line.
In today’s Key Verse the Greek word used for sin is “harmatia” which means to miss the mark. For example, an archer could miss the mark of a bulls eye, but what mark have we missed? The mark or standard of the glory of God. We have failed in thought, word and deed to live according to God’s standard which is fully revealed in the perfect life of Jesus. When an aircraft is constructed all parts must be perfect. If it is not perfect, whether by an infinitesimal or large amount it is not used. After all, who would want to fly in an aircraft with imperfect parts? These imperfect parts are thrown away and destroyed. We are all imperfect in some way, which is why we all need a Saviour to rescue and restore us to God’s perfect standard.
Prayer: Thank you Jesus that despite my sin You have rescued and restored me
