The only perfect human sacrifice
We have seen that the Hebrew word for atonement is KAPHAR. Its first use is in Genesis 6:14 where it states that Noah’s ark was “coated” or covered with pitch or a bitumen-like substance to ensure it remained waterproof. The word KAPHAR could also be used to mean to cancel (a debt) or protect from harm by being merciful through covering a fault. The KAPHAR on Noah’s boat was a protection from the penalty imposed by God on mankind’s wickedness and evil acts.
KAPHAR was then later used to describe the process of atonement that protected the Israelites from God’s penalty on their sins. However, the blood of animals could only ever be a covering protection that did not actually remove human sin and certainly not on a permanent basis. The permanent once for all time removal of human sin could only be achieved by the death of a perfect human. Like sweeping dirt under a carpet, the blood of a substitute animal could only cover sin so it was “unseen”. It required the blood of a perfect human to actually remove it. But no one was perfect until Jesus, the Passover Lamb who took away the sin of the world.
Prayer: Praise You Jesus that you have not just covered my sin but completely removed
