ADONAI
Although we have not exhausted the Jehovah names of God it is time to consider another of His titles. ADONAI is a reminder that God is the Almighty not the Al-matey! ADONAI means Master or Lord. In today’s reading Nehemiah uses several of God’s names but he concludes with beseeching ADONAI as Lord and Master and refers to the Master’s people as servants three times in one verse.
Nehemiah was a servant of King Artaxerxes so understood what it meant to be under the authority of a master. He eventually became empowered by the king to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. The power actually belonged to his master the king but because Nehemiah was a faithful servant he was entrusted with the king’s authority. This is reminiscent of the story of Jesus and the Centurion who recognised that because Jesus acted under the authority and power of the Father He had the ability to perform miracles (Matt.8:5-13). It was the centurion’s understanding of the Master-servant relationship that gave him great faith. Without God we can do nothing of ourselves (John 15:5). When we, like Paul, see ourselves as God’s servants we realise that we carry the Master’s authority and ability.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that You are my Father and I am Your child. But today I also acknowledge You as Master and myself as Your servant
