DAY 3 OF 89

El

The first name of God to consider is the Hebrew word “EL”. It means strength, the Strong One, the Mighty One. It appears many times throughout the Old Testament. One example is in Job 36:5 where it describes God, EL, as mighty and firm in purpose. He is strong in the sense of being powerful in terms of ability and also strong in the sense of being determined. Therefore He has both outward strength and inner strength. In Psalms we learn that this strength is transferable. EL, the Strong One equips us with His strength, ability and determination to be like Him.

Later we will see compound names of God where for instance “EL” is combined with another Hebrew word to form a different name which conveys more of the mightiness of God. For example “EL SHADDAI” means the “MIGHTY STRONG SUFFICIENT ONE”.

But here “EL” appears on its own to represent the strong, mighty God who does not selfishly keep His power and perfection to Himself but shares His qualities with us.  He makes us strong with His strength to overcome the obstacles we face and He makes us perfect with His righteousness to be blameless before Him.

Prayer: Strong and perfect God, I thank You that You share Your strength and perfection with me
