DAY 5 OF 89

ELOHIM

The Hebrew word ELOHIM is derived from EL and ALAH. We have seen that EL means the Strong One and ALAH means to swear an oath, binding oneself by covenant and therefore implies faithfulness. We could therefore say that ELOHIM means the STRONG FAITHFUL ONE.

In Joshua chapter 9 we have the unusual story of the Gibeonites who lived in Canaan and therefore feared destruction as one of Israel’s enemies. They tricked the Israelites into believing they came from a distant land and swore a covenant oath with them. When the ruse was discovered, the Israelites could not “undo” the covenant, even though they had been tricked into its provisions. In chapter 10 when the Gibeonites were attacked they sent messengers to Joshua who was duty bound under covenant to help and rescue them from destruction.

ELOHIM has not been tricked into a covenant with us. He knew all about our weaknesses and tendencies for sinful independence, yet still chose us to rule over His creation. We see ELOHIM entering into covenants with people such as Abraham, Noah and Moses. Ultimately He has entered into a new covenant with us through Jesus Christ to help us and save us from destruction.

Prayer: Thank You God ELOHIM that You have entered into a covenant with me
