JEHOVAH

JEHOVAH is God’s special name used more than any other in the Bible yet was not revealed to Abraham, Isaac or Jacob (Exod.6:3). It is a name subject to much debate as to exact meaning and even pronunciation. It is comprised of two Hebrew words: JAH meaning Lord as in Hallelujah – (Praise the Lord) and HAVAH referring to existence. Simplistically therefore the name means the “self existent Lord”.  But HAVAH also includes the concept not just of being but of becoming by becoming known. So a fuller explanation would be “self existent Lord who reveals Himself or makes Himself known.”

This is not merely an academic word study but a foundational understanding that God does not hide Himself from us but loves to reveal Himself to us and make Himself known to us. The Amplified Bible translates the words of Jesus thus: “I will love him and will show (reveal, manifest) Myself to him – I will let myself be clearly seen by him and make Myself real to him” (John 14:21).

Jesus is not just a historical figure but a person we can have a personal relationship with. He is not the great I was but the great I AM.
