Further Up, Further In

A beautiful and powerful benediction closes the Book of Hebrews. The author cleverly intertwines the two central components of the letter by combining elements of the person and work of Jesus with a message of keep-on-keepin’-on.

In this final song, the benediction reaches anthemic heights as the call to endurance rings out once more. The “Christ is better” theme returns, this time in full voice and with the fulfillment of the phrase: Christ is better than … the angels, the prophets, Moses, the Levites, and their priestly ministry. Indeed, Jesus and his new covenant surpass all aspects of the old covenant. He is the new and better way. 

So, in the words of C.S. Lewis, “Further up and further in!”

Once the amen’s conclude, there is a brief duration of silence before a hidden song appears. “The Word (and Afterword)” recapitulates the Christmas narrative of the letter and brings to light a melody that has progressively manifested itself throughout the album. This melody is joined with the hymn text “Before the throne of God above,” giving us one final opportunity to ascribe glory and praise to the Son of God, our great high priest.
