To help his readers endure in their faith, the writer of Hebrews gives them an extensive list of Old Testament saints who demonstrated faithfulness in their lives. From Abel to Abraham, Moses to Rahab, and a whole list of unnamed folks, these peoples’ faith serves as an example to all of us as to how we should persevere in our faith, even when our circumstances are difficult. One important point the author makes is that these people never saw the promises fully realized in their lives; we, on the other hand, have experienced the new covenant promises fulfilled in Jesus Christ: “And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us” (11:40).
