Roots Planted in Christ
Key Verse : Jeremiah 17:8
Who of us knew the journey we were going to be on? Think of all of the trials and tribulations endured, and more importantly, persevered. Where were our roots planted, and where did our trust lie when these events took place? This passage describes putting your trust in the Lord as being a tree planted by water stretching its roots into the stream.
The scariest thing a tree can face is extreme heat and drought. (Well, maybe a logger would be scarier!) That would be similar to us losing a loved one, receiving difficult news from a doctor, battling depression and loneliness, losing a job, or being in financial turmoil. All of these things would make us want to numb the pain with our “crutch of choice.” They would make our leaves whither to start, and they would eventually rob us of all joy, peace, and hope if we were not planted close to water with our roots stretched into the stream.
Where we place our trust and find our hope makes all of the difference when life happens. God wants to carry the burdens for us. He is our life source, our water. When we trust in Him and walk faithfully through life, He will provide the water. There is a choice to make—put our trust in the Lord or trust ourselves.
Imagine going through those incredibly difficult times like the tree. No fears, no worries; only a relentless trust that our Father will provide the water. God can give all of the strength, peace, hope, joy, and comfort. It is up to us to choose God, plant ourselves close to the living water, stretch our roots out to the stream, and allow our Good Good Father to fill us back up.
It is in the roots that our heart’s desires will be connected to His. Our faith never withers; instead, His truth is where our strength comes from. It is here, in the roots that are deeply planted in Christ, where we will be established, where we will pour out of our overflow. His supply is eternal. Hold fast to growing roots deep in Christ; He is our constant active source that we have access to, always.
What does it look like to actively pursue Jesus every day?
It looks like surrender.
It looks like abiding.
It is an active pursuit.
It is pressing in and clinging to the Savior.
It is praying in the Spirit, believing that His power is above all.
It is praise that shifts atmospheres.
We can easily fall into the trap of letting fear and worry lead the way. In Him, we have the power to take our thoughts captive and let our faith be the firm foundation that we stand on.
