Our Great Hope

Key Verse : Jeremiah 33:15

“In those days and at that time, I will cause a Righteous Branch to sprout up for David, and he will administer justice and righteousness in the land.”

Perhaps one of the most comforting things about the Bible is that it is a story about God and His plan for our redemption through His son Jesus.

Throughout the Old Testament, we find several passages of scripture that prophesy to the coming Messiah. In Jeremiah 33, Jeremiah uses the imagery of a “Righteous Branch” to speak of Jesus, who would come from the family of David. We know this to be true as we see in the genealogies of Jesus in Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38.

Jeremiah is in the midst of encouraging the House of Israel and the House of Judah who are currently living in exile after experiencing the devastation of Babylonian captivity. As Christians in today’s world, we can often feel like we are exiles. The truth is, this earth is temporary for us as “Ambassadors of Christ.” (This same promise of the coming Messiah is something that we can hold fast to today.)

Today we are able to rest in the promise of the second coming of Christ when he will administer justice and righteousness in the land. “ He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away ” (Revelation 21:4).

The same Righteous Branch that Jeremiah prophesied to a people in exile, is the same Righteous Branch that we anticipate the physical presence of today. Our one true hope all throughout scripture is not in another king, or monarchy, but in Jesus.
