Making a Way

Key Verse: Isaiah 43:18-19

Isaiah 43—the restoration of Israel—is one of my favorite passages in the Bible. God gives His children a beautiful promise for the difficult seasons in our lives.

The beginning of the chapter shares a powerful reminder that when we go through the waters and the fire that God will be with us. So there’s no need to fear when the God of the Universe is by your side.

But a just as equally moving passage is found in verses 16-21:

This is what God says, the God who builds a road right through the ocean, who carves a path through pounding waves, the God who summons horses and chariots and armies—they lie down and then can’t get up; they’re snuffed out like so many candles:

“Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands. Wild animals will say ‘Thank you!’—the coyotes and the buzzards—because I provided water in the desert, rivers through the sun-baked earth, drinking water for the people I chose, the people I made especially for myself, a people custom-made to praise me.

This passage has hit my heart particularly hard lately as God has been working out of me a hurt I’ve had a hard time getting over. I keep going over old news—thinking about the past—but God wants my eyes on what’s ahead.

Do you have your gaze set on what’s behind? Focusing on a past betrayal, decision, or hurt? I believe God is calling both you and me to stop focusing on the past and to start focusing on what He is doing right in front of us.

God is making a way where you haven’t seen a way. But it isn’t in the past...it’s moving forward. So press on, dear friend. Let go of what holds you back and move in the way God is making through the desert and badlands. He’s about to do something new!
