Hope For When You Feel Hopeless
Key Verse : Psalm 116:6
A few years ago, I was getting ready for a church Christmas party while my kids played in the bedroom across the hall. My daughter (who had just turned two) came into the bathroom and climbed up on the toilet to see what I was doing. I glanced up at myself in the mirror to pull my hair back, and before I realized what was happening, I heard the bloodcurdling scream. She grabbed my very hot curling iron and burned almost her entire palm.
In that moment of panic, I felt so helpless. I ran her hand under cool water while she screamed even louder. I frantically called my mom, who was more than 3,000 miles away, hoping she could tell me what else to do for my poor baby. We ended up taking her to urgent care where they doctored her hand up, but she had to endure so much more pain in the process. It was gut-wrenching for this mama!
“I was helpless, and he saved me.” Psalm 116:6
Have you ever found yourself feeling absolutely helpless? It’s natural for us to want to do something and fix the problem, but sometimes there’s nothing we can do.
When your loved one receives a cancer diagnosis.
When your teenage daughter is in a pattern of unhealthy decisions.
When your employer has to let you go because of budget cuts.
These sound like pretty hopeless situations and the feeling of hopelessness can be paralyzing. But no matter how little we can do in our own power, we can always pray.
“Because he has turned his ear to me, I will call out to him as long as I live.” Psalm 116:2
You may feel helpless, but you are not hopeless. Our weakness is our greatest strength when it leads us to dependence on God. As long as you have breath in your lungs, you can cry out to God in the midst of your helplessness. Be confident of this: He will hear you, and He will save you.
