Jesus Commissioned the Twelve
Matt. 10:5-15; Mk. 6:7-13
1 Jesus called the twelve apostles together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to heal diseases.
2 He sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
3 Jesus said to them, "Take nothing for your journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money. Do not even take two tunics apiece.
4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you depart from that town.
5 Wherever people do not receive you, when you leave that city, shake the dust from your feet as a testimony against them."
6 So the apostles departed and travelled throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.
The Thorough Perplexity of Herod
Matt. 14:1-12; Mk. 6:14-29
7 Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening through Jesus' ministry. He was thoroughly confused, because some people were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead,
8 while others claimed that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the ancient prophets had risen.
9 Herod said, "I beheaded John myself. But who is this about whom I hear such things?" He kept seeking an opportunity to see Jesus.
The Miraculous Feeding of the Five Thousand
Matt. 14:13-21; Mk. 6:30-44; Jn. 6:1-14
10 When the apostles returned from their mission, they gave Jesus a full report of all they had done. Jesus took them and withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida.
11 But when the crowds learned where He had gone, they followed Him. Jesus welcomed them and began speaking to them about the kingdom of God. He continued healing those who needed healing.
12 As the day began to draw to a close, the twelve came to Jesus and said, "Dismiss the crowd so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get food, because we are in a deserted place here."
13 But Jesus said to them, "You give them something to eat." They protested, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people."
14 There were approximately five thousand men present, not counting women and children. Jesus said to His disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."
15 The disciples did as Jesus instructed and made everyone sit down.
16 Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed and gave thanks, then broke them. He kept giving them to the disciples to distribute before the crowd.
17 They all ate and were satisfied. What was left over was picked up—twelve baskets full of broken pieces.
Jesus is the Christ of God
Matt. 16:13-19; Mk. 8:27-29
18 On one occasion while Jesus was praying in solitude, the disciples were with Him nearby. He questioned them, saying, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
19 They answered, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others say that one of the ancient prophets has risen."
20 Jesus asked them, "But you—who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God—the Messiah."
Jesus Speaks of His Death and Resurrection the First Time
Matt. 16:20-23; Mk. 8:33
21 Jesus warned them sternly and commanded them to tell this to no one.
22 He said, "It is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things, to be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, to be killed, and on the third day to be raised."
Following Jesus
Matt. 16:24-28; Mk. 8:34-9:1
23 Jesus began to say to everyone, "If anyone desires to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake—this person will save it.
25 For what does it profit a person if he gains the whole world yet loses or forfeits his own soul?
26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of this one when He comes in His glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
27 But I tell you with certainty: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."
The Transfiguration
Matt. 17:1-8; Mk. 9:2-8
28 About eight days after saying these things, Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.
29 As He was praying, the appearance of His face was dramatically altered, and His clothing became white and flashing like lightning.
30 Suddenly two men were talking with Him—Moses and Elijah.
31 They appeared in glorious splendour and were speaking about His departure, which He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.
32 Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep. But when they became fully awake, they saw Jesus' glory and the two men standing with Him.
33 As Moses and Elijah were parting from Jesus, Peter said, "Master, it is wonderful for us to be here. Let us make three shelters—one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He did not know what he was saying.
34 While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and began to overshadow them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud.
35 A voice came from the cloud, declaring, "This is My Son, the One whom I have chosen. Listen to Him!"
36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silent about this and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
The Healing of a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
Matt. 17:14-18; Mk. 9:14-27
37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus.
38 A man from the crowd cried out desperately, "Teacher, I beg You to look with compassion on my son, because he is my only child.
39 A spirit seizes him, and suddenly he cries out. It convulses him with foaming at the mouth. It departs from him only with great difficulty, crushing and bruising him severely as it leaves.
40 I begged Your disciples to cast it out, but they were not able to do so."
41 Jesus responded, "O unbelieving and perverse generation! How long must I remain with you and endure you? Bring your son here."
42 Even as the boy was approaching, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy completely, and gave him back to his father.
43 Everyone was struck with amazement at the majesty and greatness of God.
Jesus Speaks of His Death the Second Time
Matt. 17:22-23; Mk. 9:30-32
While everyone was marvelling at all that Jesus was doing, He said to His disciples,
44 "Let these words sink deeply into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men."
45 But the disciples did not understand this saying. It was hidden from them so that they could not grasp it. They were afraid to ask Him about this statement.
The Argument on Who is Greatest Among the Disciples
Matt. 18:1-5; Mk. 9:33-37
46 An argument arose among the disciples regarding which of them might be the greatest.
47 Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and had him stand beside Him.
48 He said to them, "Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me. And whoever receives Me receives the One who sent Me. For the one who is least among all of you—this is the one who is truly great."
Whoever Is Not Against You Is for You
Mk. 9:38-40
49 John responded, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we kept trying to prevent him because he does not follow with us in our group."
50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you."
The Rejection of Jesus in a Samaritan Village
51 As the time approached for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, He resolutely set His face to go to Jerusalem.
52 He sent messengers ahead of Him. They went and entered a Samaritan village to make preparations for Him.
53 But the people did not receive Him because His destination was Jerusalem.
54 When the disciples James and John saw this rejection, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"
55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them for their vindictive spirit.
56 They went to another village instead.
The Demands of Following Jesus
Matt. 8:19-22
57 As they were travelling along the road, someone said to Jesus, "I will follow You wherever You go."
58 Jesus said to him, "Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head."
59 Jesus said to another person, "Follow Me." But that person said, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."
60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead. But you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
61 Yet another person said, "I will follow You, Lord, but first let me say farewell to those at my home."
62 But Jesus said, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
