The Appointment of the Seventy-two Others
Following these events, the Lord commissioned seventy additional disciples, despatching them in pairs ahead of Him to every town and location He intended to visit personally.
He instructed them: "The spiritual harvest is abundant, yet labourers are scarce. Therefore, entreat the Lord who oversees this harvest to despatch additional workers into His harvest fields.
Proceed with this mission; understand that I am sending you forth as vulnerable lambs among predatory wolves.
Travel without carrying a money pouch, supply bag, or extra sandals, and refrain from stopping to exchange greetings along your journey.
Upon entering any household, immediately pronounce: 'May peace rest upon this dwelling.'
If a person receptive to peace resides there, your blessing will settle upon them. Otherwise, your blessing will return to you unfulfilled.
Remain in that same household, accepting whatever food and drink they offer, for labourers deserve compensation. Do not relocate between different houses.
When you enter a town that welcomes you, consume whatever meals are provided for you,
heal those who are sick within it, and proclaim to them, 'God's kingdom has drawn near to your community.'
However, when you enter a town that rejects you, proceed into its public streets and declare,
'We are removing even the dust from your town that adheres to our feet as a testimony against you. Nevertheless, understand this: God's kingdom has approached your community.'
I assure you that on the day of judgment, Sodom will receive more tolerable treatment than that town which rejects the gospel message.
Pronouncement of Woes on the Unrepentant Cities
Matt. 11:20-24
Woe upon you, Chorazin! Woe upon you, Bethsaida! Had the miraculous demonstrations performed among you occurred in the pagan cities of Tyre and Sidon, those cities would have turned from their sins long ago, adopting mourning attire and ashes as outward expressions of genuine repentance.
Nevertheless, Tyre and Sidon will experience more bearable judgment than you will endure.
And you, Capernaum—do you presume you will be elevated to heaven's glory? No; you will descend to Hades in judgment.
Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever dismisses you dismisses Me; and whoever dismisses Me dismisses the Father who commissioned Me."
The Return of the Seventy-two
The seventy disciples returned filled with joy, reporting, "Lord, even demonic spirits submit to us when we invoke Your name."
He responded to them, "I observed Satan plummeting from heaven like a lightning bolt.
Listen carefully: I have granted you authority to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and authority over all the enemy's power, ensuring nothing will harm you.
Nevertheless, do not rejoice primarily because spirits submit to your authority, but rejoice because your names have been written in heaven's register."
Jesus Rejoices in the Holy Spirit
Matt. 11:25-27; 13:16-17
At that precise moment, Jesus rejoiced greatly through the Holy Spirit and declared, "I offer You praise, Father, sovereign Lord over heaven and earth, because You have concealed these truths from those who consider themselves wise and intellectually sophisticated, yet revealed them to those who approach with childlike humility. Yes, Father, this approach pleased You.
My Father has entrusted all authority to Me, and no one truly comprehends the Son's identity except the Father, nor does anyone truly comprehend the Father's identity except the Son, along with anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him."
Turning privately towards His disciples, He said, "How privileged are the eyes that witness what you are witnessing.
For I tell you that numerous prophets and monarchs longed to observe what you are observing but never saw it; they desired to hear what you are hearing but never heard it."
The Parable of the Good
Samaritan
Then a legal expert in Mosaic Law stood to test Jesus, inquiring, "Teacher, what actions must I perform to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus replied, "What does the Law state? How do you interpret it?"
The man answered, "You shall love the Lord your God from your entire heart, with your complete soul, with your full strength, and with your whole mind; and love your neighbour as yourself."
Jesus affirmed, "Your response is correct. Live according to this principle, and you will obtain life."
But the man, attempting to justify himself, pressed Jesus, "And who qualifies as my neighbour?"
Jesus continued with a parable: "A certain individual was travelling down from Jerusalem to Jericho when bandits attacked him. They stripped his clothing, assaulted him severely, and abandoned him barely alive.
By coincidence, a priest was travelling down that same road. Upon seeing the injured man, he deliberately passed by on the opposite side.
Similarly, a Levite arrived at that location, observed the victim, and likewise passed by on the opposite side.
However, a certain Samaritan who was journeying came upon him, and upon seeing him, felt deep compassion.
He approached the victim, bandaged his wounds while pouring on olive oil and wine as medicinal treatment. Then he placed him upon his own animal, transported him to an inn, and provided care for him.
The following day, he produced two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, instructing, 'Care for him, and whatever additional expenses you incur, I will reimburse you upon my return.'
Which of these three individuals, in your judgment, proved to be a neighbour to the man assaulted by bandits?"
The legal expert replied, "The one who demonstrated compassion towards him." Jesus instructed him, "Proceed and conduct yourself likewise."
Martha and Mary
As they continued their journey, Jesus entered a particular village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.
She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at Jesus' feet and listened intently to His teaching.
Martha, however, was distracted by extensive hospitality preparations. She approached Jesus and protested, "Lord, does it not concern You that my sister has abandoned me to serve alone? Instruct her to assist me."
The Lord responded to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and agitated about numerous matters.
Yet only one thing is truly necessary. Mary has chosen the superior portion, which will not be removed from her."
