Women Who Assisted Jesus and His Disciples
1 Soon afterwards, Jesus was travelling from one city and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve apostles were with Him.
2 Certain women who had been healed from evil spirits and diseases were also travelling with them: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had been cast out;
3 Joanna, the wife of Chuza who was Herod's household manager; Susanna; and many other women who were providing for their material needs from their own financial resources.
The Parable of the Sower
Matt. 13:1-9; Mk. 4:1-9
4 As a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from one city after another, He spoke to them by way of a parable:
5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the pathway and was trampled underfoot. The birds of the sky came and devoured it.
6 Other seed fell on rocky ground. When it sprouted and grew, it quickly withered away because it had no moisture.
7 Other seed fell in the midst of thorns. The thorns grew up with the plants and choked them out.
8 Still other seed fell into good, fertile soil. It grew and produced a crop yielding a hundred times what was sown." After saying these things, Jesus called out, "The one who has ears to hear, let him hear and understand!"
The Purpose of the Parables
Matt. 13:10-17; Mk. 4:10-12
9 His disciples began to ask Him what this parable meant and signified.
10 Jesus said, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God. But to the rest, these truths come in parables, so that 'seeing they may not perceive, and hearing they may not understand.'
The Interpretation of the Parable of the Sower
Matt. 13:18-23; Mk. 4:13-20
11 Jesus explained: "Now this is what the parable means: The seed represents the word of God.
12 Those along the pathway are the ones who hear the word, but then the devil comes and snatches away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy and enthusiasm. But these people have no root. They believe for a while, but in a time of testing and trial, they fall away.
14 As for what fell among the thorns—these are the ones who hear the word, but as they go along through life, they are choked by the cares, riches, and pleasures of this life. They do not bring fruit to maturity.
15 As for the seed that fell on good soil—these are the ones who, upon hearing the word with a noble and good heart, hold fast to it firmly. They bear fruit through perseverance and patient endurance."
A Lamp on a Stand
Mk. 4:21-25
16 Jesus continued His teaching: "No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he sets it on a lampstand so that those who enter the room may see the light.
17 For nothing is concealed that will not eventually become manifest. Nothing is kept secret that will not be brought to light.
18 Therefore, pay careful attention to how you listen and hear. For whoever has spiritual understanding, more will be given to him. But whoever does not have understanding, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him."
Jesus' Mother and Brothers
Matt. 12:46-50; Mk. 3:31-35
19 Jesus' mother and brothers came to see Him, but they were not able to reach Him because of the dense crowd.
20 Someone reported to Him, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You."
21 But Jesus responded, "My mother and My brothers are these—the ones who hear the word of God and put it into practice."
Jesus Calms a Storm
Matt. 8:23-27; Mk. 4:35-41
22 One day Jesus got into a boat with His disciples and said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side of the lake." So they set sail.
23 As they were sailing across, Jesus fell asleep. A violent storm of wind descended upon the lake. The boat was being swamped with water, and they were in serious danger of sinking.
24 The disciples came to Jesus and woke Him urgently, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" Jesus awoke, rebuked the wind and the raging water, and they ceased. There was a great calm.
25 Jesus said to His disciples, "Where is your faith?" But they were afraid and filled with awe, saying to one another, "Who then is this man, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?"
The Healing of the Gerasene Demon-Possessed Man
Matt. 8:28-34; Mk. 5:1-20
26 They sailed across to the region of the Gerasenes, which is on the opposite side of the lake from Galilee.
27 When Jesus stepped out onto the land, a certain man from the city met Him. This man had demons and had not worn clothes for a considerable time. He was not living in a house but among the tombs.
28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What do I have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!"
29 Jesus had been commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him. Though he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, he would break the bonds. The demon would drive him into solitary places.
30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He answered, "Legion"—because many demons had entered into him.
31 The demons kept begging Jesus not to order them to depart into the abyss—the place of eternal confinement.
32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons implored Jesus to permit them to enter the pigs. Jesus gave them permission.
33 The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs. The herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they fled and reported it in the city and throughout the countryside.
35 People went out to see what had taken place. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out. He was sitting at Jesus' feet, clothed and in his right mind. They were frightened at the transformation.
36 Those who had witnessed the event reported to the others how the demon-possessed man had been healed and delivered.
37 All the people from the surrounding region of the Gerasenes requested Jesus to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So Jesus got into the boat and returned across the lake.
38 The man from whom the demons had gone out kept begging Jesus to let him accompany Him as a disciple.
39 But Jesus sent him away with different instructions, saying, "Return to your home and tell what great things God has done for you." The man went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him.
The Healing of a Woman with the Flow of Blood and the Raising of
Jairus' Daughter
Matt. 9:18-26; Mk. 5:21-43
40 When Jesus returned to the other side, the crowd welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.
41 A man named Jairus came to Jesus. He was a ruler of the synagogue. Falling down at Jesus' feet, he began to beg Him earnestly to come to his house,
42 because his only daughter, about twelve years old, was dying.
As Jesus was going, the crowds were pressing against Him from all sides.
43 A woman was there who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years. She had spent all her living on physicians but had not been healed by anyone.
44 She came up behind Jesus in the crowd and touched the fringe of His garment. Immediately her flow of blood stopped.
45 Jesus said, "Who is the one who touched Me?" When everyone denied it, Peter said, "Master, the crowds are pressing and thronging against You from every direction."
46 But Jesus insisted, "Someone deliberately touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me."
47 When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling. She fell down before Him and declared before all the people why she had touched Him and how she had been immediately healed.
48 Jesus said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace."
49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue ruler with devastating news: "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher any longer."
50 But when Jesus heard this, He responded, "Do not be afraid. Only believe, and she will be made well."
51 When Jesus arrived at the house, He did not permit anyone to enter with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child's father and mother.
52 Everyone was weeping and mourning for the girl. But Jesus said, "Do not weep. She is not dead but sleeping."
53 They began ridiculing Jesus, knowing with certainty that she was dead.
54 But Jesus took her by the hand and called out, "Child, arise!"
55 Her spirit returned to her body, and she stood up immediately. Jesus ordered that something should be given to her to eat, demonstrating that she was truly alive.
56 Her parents were utterly astonished. But Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone what had taken place.
