Divine Blessing

DAY 3 OF 4

You Can’t Earn Love (But You Can Receive It)

Leah is one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful figures in Genesis. She is the “unwanted” wife, living in the shadow of her sister Rachel. Her great ache is simple: *to be loved*. Her response is heartbreaking: *If I just do more, maybe then I will be valued.*

So she keeps having children, believing that her productivity will finally secure her husband’s affection: “Now my husband will love me… now my husband will be attached to me… now my husband will honor me.” But it never works. Jacob’s heart doesn’t change. Her efforts cannot purchase the love she craves.

Yet there is a quiet, powerful reality in the background: **God sees Leah. God chooses Leah. God loves Leah.** The unloved wife is the one through whom many of the tribes of Israel—and eventually the Messiah’s line—will come. The woman overlooked by Jacob is cherished and written into God’s redemptive story.

We do something similar with God and people. When we feel unworthy, we think: *If I pray more, serve more, produce more, maybe God will finally be pleased with me. Maybe people will finally accept me.* But the gospel tells us the opposite: **we are loved first**, not after we prove ourselves.

God’s love is not a paycheck you earn; it is a gift you receive. And when you know you are already loved, you no longer have to desperately perform for the approval of others.

Reflection Questions:

1. Where are you most tempted to “perform” for love—from God or from people?

2. How does Leah’s story encourage you if you’ve ever felt unseen or overlooked?

3. What truth about God’s love do you need to preach to your own heart today?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You that Your love for me does not depend on my performance. Forgive me for trying to earn what You freely give. Like Leah, I often feel unseen or less-than, but You see me and choose me. Help me to rest in Your affection and to live from love, not for love. Amen.

About this Plan

Divine Blessing

For many of us, it’s the MTV Cribs version: big houses, nice cars, a loaded bank account, everything looking smooth and successful from the outside. But Scripture paints a radically different picture of blessing.
