Make Truth Sing

DAY 7 OF 7

THE WORSHIP LEADER AS SONG WRITER

There is a command in Scripture that many churches quietly ignore: “Sing a new song.”

Not just sing songs.
Not just recycle songs.
Not just import songs.

A new song.

Throughout Scripture, new songs emerged whenever God moved in the lives of a people or nation; when He delivered. When He revealed Himself. When He rescued. When He proved Himself faithful.

When this happened, the people didn’t just respond with gratitude – they responded in song.

Here’s a big question for any worship leader to wrestle with: “If God is actively saving, sanctifying, sustaining and setting free people in my local church – why would I only sing the songs that have come out of another church?”

Don’t misunderstand me. There is tremendous value to singing songs that tell the universal story of God’s faithfulness and grace that have come from gifted songwriters around the world. But I would be surprised if there isn’t a story of what God is doing in your church, amongst your people.

Worship leaders are not just curators of what the global church is writing. We are called to be contributors.

Not because we need to be original.
Not because we’re trying to build a platform.
But because local churches have local testimonies.

Your church has:

  • Stories of salvation.
  • Prayers that were answered.
  • Grief that was carried.
  • Unity that was forged.
  • Repentance that was real.
  • Mission that is unfolding.

Why wouldn’t that become a song?

Revelation 5:9 tells us that heaven sings a new song about the Lamb who was slain — because redemption demands response. Songwriting is theology set to melody. It is testimony made repeatable. It is discipleship that people can hum on a Tuesday.

And no, not every worship leader will release an album. Not every church needs to record an EP. But every worship leader should be asking: “What is God doing here, and how can we help our people sing it?”

Because when your church sings its own songs, ownership increases, identity deepens, theology gets embedded and culture forms. You are not just building setlists; you are shaping legacy.

So let this final devotion of the week be a challenge to you to go find the stories of what God is doing amongst your people and put those to song. Has God just healed someone of cancer? Write about God’s healing. Has God provided miraculously for your church building fund? Write about God’s provision. Was your church facedown in repentance at a recent prayer gathering? Write about God’s holiness.

Start somewhere. Start today!

Reflect

  • What has God done in our church that naturally becomes the soil for a song of worship?
  • Am I creating space in my life and team for creativity, or only execution?

About this Plan

Make Truth Sing

Leading worship in the local church is both a privilege and a responsibility. Each week worship leaders help guide God’s people in responding to God through song and truth. Yet what shapes this leadership is not talent or stage presence, but the condition of the heart, the depth of theology, humility, and faithful character. Over the next seven days we’ll explore seven biblical lenses for worship leaders: worshiper, theologian, shepherd, excellence, humility, unifier, and songwriter. Because before we lead others in worship, we must first learn to worship the Lord ourselves.
