Make Truth Sing

DAY 4 OF 7

THE WORSHIP LEADER'S EXCELLENCE

One of the common criticisms of the creative space in the local church is this: we tolerate a standard that “the world” never would.

Week after week, we play music. We sing. We project visuals. We mix sound. We communicate truth through creative expression. And - if we’re honest - the average church doesn’t always do this particularly well.

I know that’s a generalisation. And yes, there are beautiful exceptions. But the point remains: We are called to excellence. Not performance-driven perfectionism. Not ego. Not platform-building.

Excellence.

We are called to bring our best to God. To steward our gifts well. To develop what He has entrusted to us. And to lead in a way that communicates: what we are doing matters.

Because it does.

The gospel matters.
The gathered church matters.
The way we present truth matters.

And for you as a leader, this means you should never feel like you’ve “arrived.” You are always becoming. You are honing your craft. Practising your instrument. Strengthening your voice. Expanding your musical vocabulary. Growing in theological depth. Refining your leadership skills.

Excellence builds credibility. People are inspired to follow leaders who are clearly committed to growth. Especially skilled people! They don’t want to follow someone who isn’t stretching themselves.

But this isn’t about impressing your team. It’s about modelling a standard.

When you pursue excellence humbly and consistently, you quietly give your team permission to do the same.

Reflect

  • Am I pursuing excellence, or am I satisfied with “good enough”? Where have I become complacent in my craft?
  • What specific area (musical, technical, theological, or leadership) have I stopped intentionally developing?
  • Does my current skill level inspire confidence in those I lead? If I were on my own team, would I feel confident following me?

About this Plan

Make Truth Sing

Leading worship in the local church is both a privilege and a responsibility. Each week worship leaders help guide God’s people in responding to God through song and truth. Yet what shapes this leadership is not talent or stage presence, but the condition of the heart, the depth of theology, humility, and faithful character. Over the next seven days we’ll explore seven biblical lenses for worship leaders: worshiper, theologian, shepherd, excellence, humility, unifier, and songwriter. Because before we lead others in worship, we must first learn to worship the Lord ourselves.
