Make Truth Sing

DAY 2 OF 7

THE WORSHIP LEADER AS THEOLOGIAN

Have you ever considered that a first-time visitor will begin forming their theology of your church before the preacher has said a single word?

Before the sermon.
Before the announcements.
Before the benediction.
They will sing.

And what they sing will shape what they believe. As worship leaders, we don’t just create moments - we shape belief. We put theology in people’s mouths. We give language to faith.

We teach - through melody and repetition - who God is, what He has done, and who we are in light of that truth. That may not mean you get to add “theologian” to your email signature, but it does mean you carry weight. It means you are responsible for more than keys and tempos. More than transitions and dynamics.

It means you must be a student of the Word.

There is a responsibility to study Scripture, to weigh doctrine carefully, to discern lyrics and to ask hard questions about what we are inviting our people to declare.

Because when a congregation sings:

“God, You are…”
“We believe…”
“You said…”

They are being formed. This is discipleship through song.

And that means our song choices cannot be shallow, careless, or disconnected from truth. Our setlists should reflect the character of the One True God - holy, sovereign, gracious, just, merciful, faithful. They should reflect the full gospel - not just how we feel, but what Christ has accomplished.

Your role is not simply to make church engaging by introducing the latest worship song to hit #1 on charts or clean up at the Dove Awards.

Your role is to make truth sing.

Reflect

  • If someone only listened to the songs you’ve led this year, what would they conclude about God?
  • Are you choosing songs primarily because they are popular, or because they are theologically rich and biblically faithful?
  • How intentionally are you growing in your understanding of Scripture and doctrine?
  • What step can you take this month to deepen your theological foundation as a worship leader?

About this Plan

Make Truth Sing

Leading worship in the local church is both a privilege and a responsibility. Each week worship leaders help guide God’s people in responding to God through song and truth. Yet what shapes this leadership is not talent or stage presence, but the condition of the heart, the depth of theology, humility, and faithful character. Over the next seven days we’ll explore seven biblical lenses for worship leaders: worshiper, theologian, shepherd, excellence, humility, unifier, and songwriter. Because before we lead others in worship, we must first learn to worship the Lord ourselves.
