Take Heart

How much care we must exercise to ensure that the difficult circumstances we occasionally encounter do not strip us of the courage to pursue our path with hope and confidence. One of the most prevalent strategies employed by the enemy is to instill discouragement within the people of God. Discouraged people cannot build, as was evidenced by those who labored on the walls of Jerusalem.

Initially, they labored with great spirit; however, when criticism and attacks arose, and they fixed their gaze upon the work that remained unfinished, they were overcome by despondency. They concluded, “We are unable to finish the wall.” The intent of their enemies was for the work of God to cease. This remains the devil’s objective, for a discouraged Christian allows their soul to settle into dejection, losing the desire to fulfill the mandates the Lord has set before us.

Nevertheless, our beloved Father, who understands and empathizes with our condition, does not abandon us when we traverse the path of discouragement. Consider the words God spoke to His people as they were prepared to enter the land He had promised them: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you,” Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV.

If you find yourself discouraged, lift your eyes to the Lord. Recall the works He has performed in your life, the testimony of His Word, and the promises He has made to you. His Holy Spirit imparts courage so that you may move forward, knowing that: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me,” Psalm 23:4 NIV.
