RESTLESS -
Picture this: The message pierced through the palace doors like a fiery arrow. Not one but two kingdoms threatened the safety of Judah. As the king paced back and forth, the prophet Isaiah came rushing in with words of assurance from God the Most High: “It will not take place, it will not happen... If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” The Words lifted the heavy weight on his shoulders. But he needed more assurance. “Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights,” Isaiah insisted. But what sign could possibly assure him in this stressful time when his kingdom was clearly at risk? He paced again, thinking. And finally, he said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.” Nonetheless, knowing what the king needed, the LORD pressed in: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” The king was astonished. Immanuel? He knew the meaning all too well. And courage began to rise in his chest as he recalled the stories he’d been told since his younger days about how this God had walked with his people since the beginning of time - God with us...
Ask yourself these questions:
- What situations in your life make you feel anxious or restless, like King Ahaz facing overwhelming threats?
- How does the promise of Immanuel - “God with us”- offer hope and assurance in your moments of restlessness?
