God With Us

God surrounds us. These words might seem intimidating to those who have the idea that God is a heavenly judge whose main purpose is to condemn and punish. The mere notion of being cornered and pointed out by that God scares them.

Others, with no fear of God in them, would laugh at the expression, attributing it to the ignorance of religious people. Their disbelief in everything concerning God makes them disparage anything that shows signs of the heavenly. So, we would probably hear them say, "Surrounded by God? Bah, what foolishness."

But there are many of us who smile when we read it, hear it, or say it. Starting from the absolute truth of the Most High's existence, His Majesty, and His greatness, knowing that He surrounds us is more than a privilege—it's a marvelous reality.

The gigantic contrast between that greatness and our smallness makes us stand in awe when we know that God surrounds us, and it leads us to humble ourselves in His presence. Not even the feeling of security that the world's most powerful army could give us by surrounding and protecting us can compare with the immense blessing and security of knowing that we are surrounded by God.

David, the King of Israel, was aware of God's constant presence in his life, and it amazed him. Despite the many dangers he faced and his many battles, he always knew that God was with him. When he felt like giving up, he cried out because he knew that this ever-present God heard him and responded to his plea.

David had a powerful army with which he faced his enemies, but he knew that the one who fought with them and gave them the victory was the Lord, the Lord Almighty. "Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! Many are saying about me, 'God will not deliver him.' But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high." Psalm 3:1-3 (NIV)

What faith! What conviction! And how wonderful to know that for us, God's children too, He is our shield; He surrounds us. We are not alone; the Lord surrounds us. Even when we don't feel Him close, when our emotions try to rise up and overshadow His presence, He is there. The eternal God surrounds us to bless and care for us—that is the truth, no matter what others say.

Let's praise the Most High and be happy to be surrounded by Him.

"As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore." Psalm 125:2 (NIV)
