Choose Courage in the Face of Adversity
Preparation makes us strong when battle comes. An article I recently read noted that those who endure war-like or critical situations best are people with physical endurance, mental preparedness, and the ability to work alone under pressure. Considering these things, how do we fare when spiritual war is waged on us and those we love? Are we courageous, fighting with the Lord’s strength, or do we crumble?
Esther, a young woman chosen to be queen, suddenly faced the unimaginable pressure of saving her people. Instead of retreating, she chose courage. Like her, we face moments that require immense courage. Whether standing for our faith, speaking against injustice, or walking through uncertainty, we have the ability to act boldly.
Her story also shows that courage is rarely a one-time act, but on the contrary, each bold step led to even greater risks, even to the point of knowing she may lose her own life. Simultaneously, though, we can see that not only did Esther get called to be braver in her story, she also became stronger in the process.
The same is true for us. As we walk closely with Jesus, we gain confidence from His past faithfulness and assurance of His future provision. He not only stands with us in battle — He goes before us. One of my favorite verses from Isaiah 30:21 reminds us: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” Just as Esther leaned into her faith, we too can trust in God to guide us as we confront our fears and take bold steps of faith.
Reflection
- How do you define courage and strength? Find verses in God’s Word to help define those for you.
- What are some fears or challenges that you are shying away from or running from? How can centering your life around Jesus give you the courage to confront them? Ask the Lord to help you face those head-on in His perfect timing and under His direction.
- Why is it hard to “stand firm in the faith” and “be strong”? Be honest with yourself and with God. He wants to give you His strength in those things.
