GENESIS 40

From this chapter we can draw a key point in the story — not only Joseph’s, but Israel’s as a whole. Taking a broad view: 400 years after Joseph, the people of Israel were enslaved in Egypt. But even before that, the Lord was already hinting that no matter what happened from that point forward, a Savior would rise.

The cupbearer being restored reminds us of the blood of Jesus (wine), the One who restores and brings us back to God’s house. The baker was hanged, just as Jesus’ body (bread) was hung on a cross. In Genesis 40, we already clearly see the work of the cross — God’s plan of redemption for humanity — being expressed by the Lord Himself.

Before any pain, slavery, or fear the people of Israel would face, God was already pointing to the One who would bring peace and hope to humanity, through the story of Joseph.

LET'S PRAY:

Read Isaiah 53:3-5. There is nothing you are going through that He did not carry on the cross. Anxiety, guilt, and shame for sin, sickness, disease... by His wounds we are healed! Spend a few minutes recognizing what Jesus did on that cross. Use your imagination to see Him in that moment, and allow Jesus' wounds to heal you once again.
