Love It! 30 Days of Inspiration in Psalm 119

DAY 2 OF 30

Day 2 Psalm 119:9-16 Hiding God’s Word in Your Heart

“Beth” heads up the second set of verses and is the second letter in the Hebrew alphabet. It means “house or dwelling.” It can also refer to a physical house, a family, or a place of shared spaces in a broader sense. So, think of it like your heart is the dwelling place for God’s Word.

This set of scriptures explores the concept of purity and how God’s Word, when hidden in the heart, helps one stay on the right path and avoid sin. It answers the question, “How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.” (v.9 NLT) Other versions encourage us to live according to God’s Word, being single-minded in pursuit of purity. The Message refers to the Bible, full of road signs posted along life’s way. By following these signs and going in the direction that God leads, we will avoid sin and live wisely.

In today’s culture, we are drowning in a sea of sinful images and attractions. Everywhere we look, we find temptation to fill our minds with thoughts and ideas God wouldn’t approve of. So how do we stay pure living among all the toxic influences and contaminating environments? We can’t do this on our own, but must have wisdom and strength to face the tempting influences around us. We can find strength and wisdom by reading God’s Word and doing what it says.

Psalm 119:11 is a personal favorite. “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”(NLT) Think of your heart like a vault filled with God’s promises. If we bank our behavior on His promises, we won’t be bankrupt. Memorizing key verses is one way to hide truth in your heart.

Hiding God’s Word in our hearts is a deterrent to sin. This alone should inspire us to memorize scriptures. But memorization alone will not keep us from sin; we must also put God’s Word to work in our lives, making it a vital guide for everything we do.

Question: What Scripture could you memorize this week to guard your heart?

Prayer: Dear Lord, Your Word says I am to hide truth in my heart so that I don’t sin against You. I want to pursue Your pure life and not be tempted with bad thoughts that cause me to sin. I surrender my mind to You for healing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
