30 Days With the Psalms

DAY 12 OF 30

God’s wonderful words

“The words of the LORD are pure words,
like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times” (Psalm 12:7 ESV).

In this psalm, David compares the words of man with the words of God. In the first part of this psalm, he complains about people around him: they utter lies, they boast, they have flattering lips and a double-minded heart when they speak… In short, they make other people’s lives difficult by their bad use of words–which reveals how wicked their hearts actually are. Living in such circles can be discouraging and frustrating.

How comforting it is that God’s words are utterly different. They are pure. They are trustworthy. They are good. This implies that we can rely on God’s promises, which give hope in difficult circumstances.

God promises to arise against injustice and to protect the needy (verse 5). And there are many more promises recorded in the Bible. The Lord promises forgiveness and eternal life for whoever believes in Him. He promises a renewed heaven and earth where evil will be no more. And all these promises will come true. God is faithful; He will surely do it (1 Thessalonians 5:24).

What kind of words do you speak? Are they pure, good and trustworthy? What effect do your words have on other people?
