DAY 18 OF 30

Companions in Exile

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18)

To be in exile is to live far from home, often without a choice, carrying memories of what was lost and uncertainty about what lies ahead. A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee because of conflict, persecution, or disaster, leaving everything behind. Many cross borders into unfamiliar countries; others remain displaced within their own nations. In every case, their journey carries deep loss—home, family, security, and often hope itself.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Covenant World Relief and Development partners with AGIR-RDC to care for those uprooted by conflict. In the Don Bosco displacement camp, women like Amani are finding new ways forward through psychosocial support groups. These gatherings offer skills for managing stress and family tensions, and they create safe spaces for honesty, encouragement, and prayer. Amani calls what she learned “life-changing,” noting how it transformed her home life and her outlook on the future. Over time, bonds form among group members, reminding them they are not alone.

In Ukraine, war has scattered families and shattered communities. Through Medical Teams International (MTI), Covenant World Relief and Development supports trauma care and psychosocial services for those navigating deep grief and uncertainty. Oleg, a 61-year-old man who lost his son and friends in the war, suffered a stroke. Isolated and hopeless, he saw no reason to keep going—until MTI’s mental health staff began visiting regularly. Their counseling sessions, paired with simple, relational activities, helped Oleg rediscover purpose and connection. Those visits became lifelines, anchoring him in a web of compassionate relationships when his world had come apart.

In both DR Congo and Ukraine, these ministries show that healing often begins in relationship. Food, water, and shelter are essential, but without emotional and spiritual care, wounds can remain hidden. The intentional presence of counselors, volunteers, and neighbors communicates the love and friendship of Christ, saying, “You matter. You are not forgotten. You are loved.”

This is the heart of the gospel. Jesus is a friend of all who fear him, remaining close to the brokenhearted, walking with them through grief and toward hope.

Reflection Question

Where might God be inviting you to create spaces of trust and presence for those in your community who feel displaced, overlooked, or forgotten?

Prayer Points

  • For emotional and spiritual healing for refugees and displaced persons in Congo, Ukraine, and worldwide.
  • For ministry partners to serve with wisdom, endurance, and deep compassion.
  • For safe spaces where trust can grow and people can share their stories without fear.
  • For God’s presence to be felt in every camp, shelter, and host community.

Prayer

Lord, you are near to the brokenhearted. Teach us to be people of presence—slow to speak, quick to listen, and faithful in walking alongside those who carry heavy burdens. May our relationships reflect your steadfast love and healing grace. Amen.

About this Plan

Global Gospel

Global Gospel is a 30-day devotional exploring what it means to join God’s mission in the world. Through Scripture reflections and personal stories from diverse regions, contributors share moments of entering new communities as the stranger and finding welcome through Christ’s love. As you pray and reflect with the global church, may these voices inspire you to live out the gospel—nearby, across cultures, and to the ends of the earth.
