Companions in Suffering

“Join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God” (2 Timothy 1:8)

Paul’s words to Timothy are sobering: companionship in the gospel sometimes means companionship in suffering. To follow Jesus is to share in his mission, and that mission often leads us into places where hardship is real. This is not simply about enduring our own trials, but about bearing one another’s burdens in the midst of suffering—standing with those who are hurting. Around the world, believers live and serve in places where their faith is tested daily in conflict zones, in communities facing persecution, and in areas rebuilding after disaster.

To share in suffering means we are called to enter into the reality of others, to pray faithfully for them, to speak on their behalf when they cannot, to offer tangible help, and to let their stories shape our own discipleship. When we stand with those who suffer, we not only affirm their dignity, but we also bear witness to the God who has not abandoned them.

This kind of solidarity is not rooted in human strength alone. Paul reminds Timothy that it is “by the power of God” that we can endure together. Left to ourselves, we might shrink back. But in Christ, we find the courage to be present and trust that God’s grace is sufficient.

Such shared suffering becomes a testimony. It proclaims to the watching world that the body of Christ is held together by the love of Jesus poured out through God's people. It offers a glimpse of the kingdom to come—a place where no one suffers alone, justice is restored, and every tear is wiped away.

How can you stand with those in your community—or across the globe—who are enduring hardship or suffering for the sake of the gospel? What might shared presence, prayer, or advocacy look like for you?

Prayer

Faithful God, strengthen all who suffer for your name. Give me the courage to be a true companion in both joy and trial. Teach me to bear burdens alongside others, trusting in your sustaining grace. Amen.
