21 Days of Prayer; a Devotion on JohnSample

John 20 | My Lord and my God
‘Where does it say in the Bible that Jesus is God?’ A common question that Christians can face, even from people who are sympathetic to the teachings of Jesus. Why not just respect Jesus as a teacher? Why worship him as God? Because of John 20. The resurrected Jesus, after being crucified, buried, and rising from the dead, steps into the full glory of his divinity. He breathes onto his disciples and tells them to ‘receive the Holy Spirit’ just as God breathed life into dust all those years ago in Eden. He does only what God can do - give life. Then Thomas, after seeing His wounds, makes the climactic, earthshattering confession of calling Jesus ‘My Lord and my God.’ This is the truest statement about Jesus, and it comes out of the mouth of a weak and doubting Thomas. He, who is Messiah and Son of God, is Lord and God. That is the mystery of the person of Jesus and the identity of God in the Gospel of John. And this is the call to faith that you, the reader, are invited into. Even in doubt and weakness, will you say with Thomas - My Lord and my God?
