21 Days of Prayer; a Devotion on John

DAY 13 OF 21

John 13 | Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

“I will always love you” – many have sung along to the song, many have professed the promise, but it ain't always easy, and we are a fickle species, and our love often falters. John speaks of Jesus ‘Having loved’, past tense, and many of us can say we have loved – but perhaps that love has long faded, a former love. But then John states that Jesus ‘loved them to the end’. This is not a love that ran its course, ran out, ran dry. This is a love that carries through to the end – the word is ‘telos’ – meaning goal, completion, fulfilment, finale. Jesus' love never fails, never falters, never fades. Jesus’ love for the world carried him to the crib and to the cross; it carried him from heaven to earth, his love carried him to hell and back; and this love will carry him once more from heaven to earth to bring us to heaven. Having loved us, he still loves us; he will love us to the end. And what about our love for him?
