The Seven Sayings of Jesus From the CrossSample

"I Am Thirsty" (John 19:28)
As Jesus nears death, He declares, "I am thirsty." On a physical level, this is the expected agony of crucifixion — severe blood loss, exhaustion, and dehydration. But John makes it clear: Jesus said this to fulfill Scripture.
The reference is likely to Psalm 22:15: "My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth." It also connects to Psalm 69:21, where the suffering servant is given vinegar to drink.
The Greek word Jesus uses for thirsty is διψῶ (dipsō), which can mean both literal thirst and a deep longing. Earlier, in John 4:13-14, Jesus told the Samaritan woman that whoever drinks the water He gives will never thirst again. Now, the One who offered living water to others is experiencing thirst Himself.
This moment is rich in meaning:
- Jesus fully enters human suffering — physically, emotionally, spiritually.
- His thirst is not only physical, but symbolic of His longing to complete the work of redemption.
- His suffering satisfies our deepest spiritual thirst.
Personal Application
- What areas of your life feel spiritually dry? How can Jesus quench that thirst?
- How does Jesus’ willingness to endure physical suffering affect your understanding of His love?
- What does it mean to drink from the “living water” of Christ?
Prayer
Jesus, You thirsted so that I might never thirst again. Thank You for stepping into human suffering. When my soul feels dry and weary, remind me that You alone satisfy. Let me drink deeply from Your presence. Amen.
