DAY 15 OF 28

Day 15—Worship includes singing

Devotional
This week, we’ll be focusing on how worship is physical, meaning that it involves your voice and your body. Today, let’s look at the central part singing has in the act of worship. The word "worship" often refers to singing songs to God, and it tends to be in reference to a corporate setting like a church service. However, in Psalm 149 (NIV), we see a glimpse of the variety that worship can, and should, take. The psalmist calls us to sing in the assembly of faithful people (Psalm 149:1 NIV), but also to sing for joy "on our beds" (Psalm 149:5 NIV). There seems to be a precedent that sung worship is both personal (just for you) and public (in the sight of others), and can happen both corporately (with others) or privately (alone). We see these examples through Scripture: Jesus and the disciples sing a hymn together before heading to Gethsemane (Mark 14:26 NIV), the elders and four living creatures sing a new song together to the Lamb (Revelation 5 NIV), and Paul says that you should "sing with your spirit" and "sing with understanding" (1 Corinthians 14:15-16 NIV). In the Psalms, David tells his soul to sing, and also encourages people to sing together. Simply put, your worship cannot be kept for just one day or one environment. So would praise ever be on your lips, in both the personal private moments and the public times of corporate worship.

Prayer
God, thank You that I can sing praise to You. Don’t let me just do it with the church, or on my own, but help me develop a lifestyle of singing songs of praise to You wherever I am. Amen.

Application
Try and sing a song to God every day this week (God loves to hear your voice, even if you’re not sure about it). It can be a known song or your own song, privately or in public. But don’t wait for Sunday to worship God!

About this Plan

Deeper in Worship

"Deeper In Worship" is a 28-day plan designed to help you grow in your love for God through a fuller understanding of why and how we worship. Worship is for God alone; it is deeply spiritual, often physical, and a journey into encountering the presence of God. The plan includes a daily Psalm and a New Testament passage. It finishes with a short devotional, a prayer, and a suggested application.
